NXIVM taught that many failures and emotional reactions arose from unexamined beliefs. Its Rational Inquiry method promised to identify those beliefs, revise their meaning, and increase a person's freedom, effectiveness, and ethical conduct.

The system presented self-improvement as a path to a more ethical world. Its effectiveness was an organizational claim. Former participants described both personal benefits and manipulation.
