The Religion of Humanity

Branch

History & overview · every faith gets one

Worship the species, and remember that most of it is dead.

Auguste Comte's positivist church: a religion with no god, in which the object of worship is Humanity itself — the Great Being, composed overwhelmingly of the dead, whose accumulated work every living person inherits. It has a thirteen-month calendar of secular saints, a priesthood, sacraments, and the motto on the Brazilian flag. One temple in the world still opens for Sunday worship, in Porto Alegre.

Why it is filed this way

A movement rather than a philosophy: Comte built an actual church with clergy, sacraments, buildings and a liturgical year, and it was constituted as such in France, England, Chile, Mexico and Brazil. Positivism as a philosophy of science long outlived the church and is usually discussed without it, which is why the religion is often treated as an eccentric footnote rather than the thing Comte spent his last decade constructing.

Almost entirely gone. The Igreja Positivista do Brasil, founded in 1881, still exists; its Templo da Humanidade in Rio de Janeiro closed after part of the roof collapsed in 2009 and was subsequently interdicted. The Templo Positivista in Porto Alegre, inaugurated on 19 January 1928 — Comte's birthday — opens every Sunday at ten and describes itself as the only positivist temple still in activity in the world. It counts just over thirty adherents across the state.

The founding

Comte had spent two decades building positivism as a philosophy of science when, after the death of Clotilde de Vaux in 1846, he concluded that a doctrine which did not command the feelings could not organise a society. He designed a religion to carry it: calendar, sacraments, priesthood, temples and a catechism, with Humanity in the position God had vacated. Most of his scientific followers regarded this as a catastrophe and left.

Its founding is bound to Auguste Comte — 1849 CE.

What it holds

Reality. One knowable world, understood through the positive sciences, with nothing behind it.

The divine. No god, and an object of worship in the place of one. Le Grand Etre, the Great Being, is Humanity considered as a single continuing organism — the dead, the living and the unborn — which is genuinely worshipped, addressed and thanked. Comte's argument is that the individual owes almost everything to people who are already gone, so the collectivity of the dead is the only benefactor that actually exists..

Death and after. Subjective immortality: the dead continue in the memory and the effects of the living, and nowhere else..
