History & overview · every faith gets one
Society as ritual: become fully human through the forms.
The tradition of Confucius: humaneness cultivated through ritual propriety, family reverence, and study. Less a church than an operating system for civilization — it ran East Asia's states, schools, and households for two millennia.
Why it is filed this way
Whether this is a religion or an ethical philosophy has been argued for a century, in China as much as outside it. It is carried here as a tradition because it has temples, a ritual calendar, an ancestral cult and a professional class that maintains them — the things the word usually means. Readers who take it as a philosophy are disagreeing with a real body of scholarship, not with a label invented here.
The founding
A minor official who never held the power he sought spent his life teaching that good government begins in good persons — and became, after death, the most influential teacher in East Asian history.
Its founding is bound to Confucius (Kong Fuzi) — c. 500 BCE.
What it holds
Reality. A moral order (Tian, Heaven) that history itself enforces.
The divine. Tian, Heaven, is not a person and is not petitioned like one — it has no image, no myth and no biography, and it acts by withdrawing its mandate rather than by intervening. Confucius refused questions about spirits and about death, and the tradition has argued ever since whether that was agnosticism or good manners. What is actually addressed, constantly, is the ancestors — at the household shrine, at the grave, and in the lineage hall — and, twice a year, Confucius himself, at a temple ceremony that is a sacrifice in form and a commemoration in most participants' description..
Death and after. Ancestors endure; the rites tend the bond.
