What it means here
our wording, so the faiths below can be compared — never any tradition's own definitionRight form in every encounter — ceremony as the shape of respect.
Every passage on this page is one faith's own phrasing. Sharing an idea is not agreement: Hinduism and The Religion of Humanity are both here because each says something this word covers, and what they say may flatly contradict each other. The idea is the place they can be set side by side.

Ritual propriety (li) carries the culture.
Bow correctly, mourn correctly, pour tea correctly — the forms are not empty; they are how respect travels between generations.

Lead by virtue, not by punishment.
Govern by law and penalty and people will avoid punishment without shame; govern by virtue and ritual and they will develop a sense of shame and correct themselves. The whole argument with the Legalists is in that sentence, and the Legalists ran the state that unified China.

Respect the head.
A mounted person is not themselves and must not be grabbed, laughed at, questioned as themselves, or photographed. The camera is the live grievance — a century of outsiders filming ceremonies for their own purposes has meant a great many houses will not admit foreigners at all, and are right not to.

The wedding — contract, canopy, one glass.
The glass is broken for Jerusalem at the highest point of the happiest day, which is the tradition's temperament in a single gesture. Mizrahi and Yemenite families hold a henna night days beforehand, with the bride in an embroidered costume that is usually rented and always photographed.

Honour your father and your mother.
The fifth commandment, and the only one with a stated reward. The Talmud's example of perfect honour is a gentile — Dama ben Netina, who refused to wake his sleeping father to complete a large sale.

Ordinary life, held loosely.
Sextus lists four things that guide conduct without requiring any belief: nature, feeling, custom and training. A sceptic goes to the temple, votes, practises medicine, and asserts nothing.

Crossing the threshold.
Shoes off, feet washed, head covered, forehead to the floor, coin in the box, and then sit on the floor with everyone else — no chairs, no pews, no reserved rows. The four doors of the Harmandir Sahib state the rule architecturally: enter from any direction, and walk down rather than up.

Prakash and Sukhasan — the Guru wakes and sleeps.
At dawn the scripture is carried on someone's head to a canopied throne, opened, and fanned with a whisk all day; at night it is wrapped and carried to its own room, where it has a bed. Sikhs describe this as the courtesy owed a living sovereign, and reformers inside the Panth ask, regularly, where the line to idolatry now sits.

Ordem e Progresso.
The Brazilian flag carries a positivist motto, put there in 1889 by members of the Igreja Positivista do Brasil. It is the largest surviving artefact of the religion by some distance.

The doorway, the tulsi, and the kitchen.
A rice-flour kolam at the door before sunrise, a lamp at the tulsi plant at dusk, lemons and chillies against the evil eye, and a kitchen with rules about who cooks and who may walk in. The domestic religion is run almost entirely by women and needs no priest at all.

The fire offering.
Ghee and grain into a fire in a brick or copper altar, each offering named as it goes and given away with the words idam na mama — this is not mine. The full shrauta rites survive with a few hundred Nambudiri and Andhra families, and the twelve-day Athirathram they perform is arguably the oldest ritual still being carried out anywhere on earth.

Greet properly.
Men prostrate flat, women kneel, and elders are never addressed by name alone. It looks to outsiders like formality and functions as something else: the greeting establishes relative position before any conversation happens, and in the diaspora it survives inside religious houses long after it has gone from the street.

Where it is argued
passages a tradition marks as contested inside itself — the disagreement is theirs, not ours
What was asked of women.
Follow the father, then the husband, then the son; cultivate conduct, speech, appearance and work. None of it is from Confucius, who barely mentions women at all. It was assembled in the Han and hardened over the next fifteen hundred years into footbinding, widow chastity arches and the exclusion of daughters from the genealogy.

X
Xunzi.
He argued that human nature is bad and that everything good is deliberate construction — ritual is the artifice that makes people fit to live together, and Heaven is regular and impersonal and does not care. It is the most rigorous position in the tradition, and it got him expelled from the Confucian temple in 1530.
