Aparigraha — non-possession.

Attachment weighs the soul; the monk owns nothing, the layperson owns lightly.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Aparigraha is non-possession, and it produces one of the more interesting tensions in world religion: Jain monastics own almost nothing, while the Jain laity is among the most commercially successful communities in India. The reconciliation offered is attachment rather than quantity — wealth is permitted if it is held loosely, earned without harm, and given away substantially. Jain philanthropy, particularly in animal welfare and hospitals, runs far above the community's size.
