Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
Hayyi Rabbi — the Great Life, or the Life — is the supreme God of the World of Light, from whom souls descend and to whom they return. The name is used constantly in Mandaean liturgy, and the standard greeting invokes it. The material world is not Hayyi Rabbi's direct work in the classical Mandaean account, which is what places the religion on the Gnostic side of the ancient divide.
