Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
Yahya Yuhana is the Mandaean name for John the Baptist, held to be the greatest of the teachers and the model for every masbuta performed since. Mandaean texts describe his life and teaching at length in the Book of John, and portray his baptism of Jesus as an event Jesus then misrepresented. For historians of religion, a community continuously practicing river baptism and claiming John rather than Jesus is a genuinely significant survival.
