Rite of Sunni Islam
Jumu'ah — Friday prayer.
The week's congregational gathering: sermon, then rows bowing as one.
⏱ weekly — Friday noon◌ the gathered community
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held
Friday prayer is the one congregational obligation in the week for Sunni men, and it displaces rather than supplements the midday prayer. The khutbah preceding it has a formal structure and legal requirements, and historically the naming of the ruler in it was the public marker of who held legitimate authority — which made control of the pulpit a political matter, as it remains in states that appoint or vet imams today.
