Story of Synanon

Synanon recast itself as a religion in the 1970s.

After developing from treatment program into a self-contained society, Synanon declared itself a religion in 1974 and later used the name Synanon Church. The shift formalized its claim to offer a complete way of life, although later courts scrutinized whether the organization qualified for religious tax exemption.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The 1974 religious declaration followed sixteen years of recovery and communal development. Later leadership rhetoric included a militant New Religious Posture. In 1984, a federal court dismissed Synanon’s tax-exemption case for destruction and alteration of evidence. It did not need to decide whether Synanon was a religion.
