Leadership-linked violence contributed to Synanon's collapse.
A federal court recorded threats and attacks tied to Synanon leaders and members, including Charles Dederich's no-contest conviction with two members for conspiracy to murder attorney Paul Morantz. The episode and ensuing legal and tax consequences accelerated the organization's decline.
Morantz had represented former members and was bitten by a rattlesnake placed in his mailbox in 1978. The public record supports naming Dederich and the convicted participants and discussing organizational rhetoric and enforcement groups. It does not justify treating every resident as violent or criminal. Synanon's accountability history belongs alongside its recovery influence and the varied testimony of people who lived there, rather than replacing the whole page with the crime.
