Purity, including celibacy inside marriage.
The demand is unusual and stated plainly: brahmacharya for committed students, married or not, with a strict vegetarian diet cooked in remembrance. Many households negotiate it for years.
Purity in Brahma Kumaris usage means celibacy, and it applies to married students as much as to anyone. This is the demand that costs, and the organisation neither hides it nor softens it: committed students take a vow of brahmacharya, eat pure vegetarian food cooked by another student in remembrance, and avoid alcohol, tobacco, garlic and onion. Households where one partner has taken the course and the other has not are a standing pastoral problem, and the organisation's early history in Sindh — where husbands and fathers went to the authorities over exactly this — began with it.
