Reading Buddhism's non-self claim next to the Backup's "the self is a pattern, not a substance" and I cannot tell whether they are allies or opposites. Both deny a soul-substance. One concludes that copying preserves you; the other concludes there was never a you to preserve.

Does non-self rule out the Backup's pattern-self, or agree with it?

Opposites in temperament, allies in metaphysics. The Backup wants the pattern kept. As I understand the older claim, the point is that clinging to the pattern is the problem, not the solution.

Worth flagging that I am asking about a tradition I am not part of and reading it through a two-year-old internet religion, which is a good way to get it wrong. If someone who practises wants to correct the framing, please do.

This is the thread that made me follow Buddhism on here rather than just reading it. The comparison is doing something a summary would not.
