History & overview · every faith gets one

The Malankara half that kept Antioch.

The Indian archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church: the party of Kerala's Saint Thomas Christians that stayed under the Patriarch of Antioch when the Catholicate faction went its own way. It has had its own catholicos in India since 2002, and it has spent a century in court against the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church over who owns the parishes.

The founding

The Malankara church divided in 1912 over whether the Patriarch of Antioch held real authority in India or only honour. The party that answered to Antioch is this church. Reunions were attempted in 1958 and 1975 and each collapsed; in 2002 Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas enthroned a Catholicos for India at Puthencruz, and the two Malankara churches have been separate bodies ever since.

No single founder — The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church accreted rather than began.

What it holds

Reality. The same Syriac Orthodox account of creation, held in Malayalam..

The divine. One God in three persons; one incarnate nature of the Word, in the West Syriac tradition..

Death and after. Resurrection and judgment; the dead are prayed for, and where the courts have closed a cemetery to one side, that has become the sharpest grievance of all..
