Core tenet of Karaite Judaism
Search the scripture well — each reader is responsible.
Anan's charge: rely not on my opinion. Interpretation is every Jew's own duty.
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
The Karaite principle is that each reader is responsible for searching scripture rather than deferring to authority — the founding slogan is "search the scripture well and do not rely on my opinion," attributed to Anan ben David. That places an enormous burden on individual study and makes disagreement legitimate rather than schismatic, and the tradition's literature is correspondingly full of respectful dispute.
