Core tenet of Karaite Judaism
The calendar follows the visible moon.
Months begin at the sighted crescent, as the text — not the computed calendar — directs.
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
The Karaite calendar is set by direct observation: the new month begins when the crescent is actually sighted, and the year is intercalated by the state of the barley in the land of Israel, rather than by the fixed calculation the rabbis adopted in the fourth century. It is a small technical difference with a large practical effect — Karaite and rabbinic holidays frequently fall on different days, which keeps the communities visibly distinct.
