Pyrrhonism (Scepticism)

Branch
Core tenet of Pyrrhonism (Scepticism)

For every argument, an equal argument.

Isostheneia: set the case against the case until neither outweighs the other. What follows is not a conclusion but a stop.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Equipollence is the engine of the whole method: not proving the negative, but producing an opposing case of exactly matching weight so that assent cannot settle. Sextus supplies the machinery — ten modes attributed to Aenesidemus, turning on differences between animals, between people, between senses, between circumstances, and five later modes turning on regress and circularity. The point is not to win but to stall, which is why Pyrrhonism is distinguished sharply from the Academic scepticism that asserted nothing can be known. Asserting that nothing can be known is, to a Pyrrhonist, one more dogma.
