History & overview · every faith gets one

A 1930 crossing, with the Qurbana carried over intact.

The Kerala church formed when Archbishop Mar Ivanios and part of the Malankara Orthodox community entered communion with Rome in 1930 while keeping their West Syriac liturgy whole. It has been a major archiepiscopal church since 2005, its head bears the title Catholicos, and its seat is at the Catholicate Centre in Trivandrum.

The founding

Mar Ivanios founded the Bethany Ashram in 1919 and was authorised by the Malankara Orthodox synod in 1926 to open correspondence with Rome. On 20 September 1930 he and Bishop Mar Theophilos were received into the Catholic Church on terms that preserved the Malankara liturgy and discipline; Pius XI erected the hierarchy in 1932. Rome calls it a reunion; the church Mar Ivanios left calls it a departure.

Its founding is bound to Geevarghese Mar Ivanios — 1930 CE.

What it holds

Reality. The Malankara reading of creation, unchanged by the crossing..

The divine. One God in three persons; Chalcedonian christology in the West Syriac rite the church brought with it..

Death and after. Resurrection and judgment; Catholic teaching, with the Malankara commemorations of the dead..
