Haitian Vodou

Branch
Core tenet of Haitian Vodou

There is no devil in this.

No adversary of Bondye, no principle of evil, no hell. There is harm, and harm has a source — a person who paid for it, a neglected obligation, an ancestor who was not fed. The problem is always somebody's conduct, which is a considerably more uncomfortable theology than a devil.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

There is no adversary of Bondye in Vodou, no principle of evil, no hell and no eternal punishment. The lwa are not divided into good and bad ones; they are divided into cool and hot, and all of them can be dangerous if mishandled. Misfortune therefore requires an account in terms of conduct: an obligation not met, a promise broken, an ancestor unfed, a jealous neighbour who paid somebody, a lwa who was not given what was agreed. This is theologically demanding in a way a devil is not, because it locates responsibility among people and their arrangements rather than in an external tempter, and it means that consultations are largely diagnostic — the question is not why does God permit this but what did somebody fail to do, and the answer frequently implicates the client or their family.
