Core tenet of Jainism
The soul is liberated by its own effort.
No god saves; austerity and care burn karma from the soul until it rises free.
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
Jainism has no creator god and no divine rescue: liberation is achieved by the soul's own effort in burning off accumulated karma, which Jain thought treats as a subtle physical substance that adheres to the soul and weighs it down. The Tirthankaras show the route but cannot pull anyone along it, which is why they are revered rather than petitioned. It is one of the most demanding soteriologies on offer, and it is entirely self-powered.
