Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The Wheel of the Year has eight sabbats: four cross-quarter fire festivals (Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh) and the two solstices and two equinoxes. The eightfold arrangement is a mid-twentieth-century synthesis drawing on Irish, Anglo-Saxon, and other sources rather than an inherited pre-Christian calendar — a fact contemporary Wiccans generally acknowledge openly, having moved away from the earlier claim of unbroken descent from an ancient witch cult.
