Vesak.
Birth, awakening, and passing of the Buddha honored on one full-moon day.
Vesak collapses three events into one full-moon day — the Buddha's birth, awakening, and final passing — on the theory that they are one arc rather than three anniversaries. Practice varies enormously: lanterns and bathing the infant-Buddha statue in East Asia, all-night meditation and the release of caged animals in Southeast Asia, and in some countries a national holiday with the sale of alcohol suspended. Theravada and Mahayana calendars place it differently, so there is no single date on which the Buddhist world observes it.
