Core tenet of Vedic Religion

Ritual sustains the order of the world.

The fire altar kept rta — cosmic order — turning; sacrifice was cosmology in practice.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Vedic religion is ritual-first in a way its descendants are not: the sacrifice does not petition the gods so much as operate the machinery of the cosmos, and a correctly performed rite compels a result. The technical term is rta — the order that keeps the sun moving and the seasons turning — and the priest's job is maintenance. The later Indian traditions inherited the vocabulary and inverted the priority, moving the decisive action from the altar to the interior, which is what the Upanishads are doing.
