Ifá divination.
The chain is cast, the odu falls, the verses are chanted — and the question is placed inside a story older than the asking.
A divination session works by casting the opele chain or manipulating palm nuts to produce a figure, which the babalawo identifies as one of the 256 odu. He then chants its verses — sometimes for a long time — and the client identifies which story matches their situation. Prescribed sacrifice (ebo) follows. Training takes many years and is essentially a feat of memorization; the system's binary structure has attracted the interest of mathematicians and computer scientists.
