The promised renewal has come.
Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as the awaited messiah and renewer — the claim the mainstream rejects.
The Ahmadiyya Community holds that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who declared in 1889 in Punjab, was the promised Messiah and Mahdi — a renewer within Islam rather than a bringer of new law. That claim is precisely why most other Muslims reject the community as non-Muslim: it appears to them to compromise the finality of prophethood, which Ahmadis deny by distinguishing between law-bearing prophethood, which ended, and subordinate renewal, which did not. Pakistan constitutionally declared Ahmadis non-Muslim in 1974, and they face criminal penalties there for practicing openly.
