The economy is a spiritual question.
PROUT, set out in 1959, proposes a floor and a ceiling on income, local cooperative ownership and a cap on the accumulation of physical wealth. Ananda Marga treats it as part of the teaching, not as politics attached to it.
PROUT — the Progressive Utilization Theory, set out in 1959 — proposes a guaranteed minimum for everyone, a ceiling on accumulated physical wealth, cooperative ownership of most production, and economic decisions taken at the level of the region that has to live with them. Sarkar wrote extensively on it and Ananda Marga treats it as part of the teaching rather than as politics bolted on. That position has had consequences: PROUT-influenced political activity in West Bengal in the 1960s and 1970s put the organisation into direct conflict with the ruling Communist Party, which is the background to both the prosecution of Sarkar and the killings at Bijon Setu.
