History & overview · every faith gets one
A calendar quarrel that hardened into a church.
The body that broke from the Assyrian Church of the East after Patriarch Mar Shimun's reforms of 1964 — chiefly the move to the Gregorian calendar and the shortening of Lent — and consecrated its own patriarch in 1968. Same liturgy, same theology, older dates; talks about putting the two churches back together have been running, and stalling, since 2010.
Why it is filed this way
Living, and in reunification talks with the Assyrian Church of the East that have started and stopped repeatedly since 2010.
The founding
In March 1964 Mar Shimun, ruling from exile in the United States, adopted the Gregorian calendar and trimmed the fasts. Clergy in Iraq read this as a Western import imposed by a patriarch who had not lived among them for thirty years; in 1968 Mar Thoma Darmo, metropolitan in India, went to Baghdad and consecrated a rival hierarchy. Mar Addai II led the church from 1972 until his death in 2022.
Its founding is bound to Mar Thoma Darmo — 1968 CE.
