Core tenet of The Baptists

The soul is free — the state has no say in faith.

Soul liberty: Baptists argued religious freedom from prison cells long before constitutions agreed.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Soul competency — sometimes soul liberty — is the doctrine that each person stands before God individually and no authority may compel belief, and Baptists turned it into a political program. Roger Williams founded Rhode Island on it in 1636 with the first genuine religious liberty guarantee in the Americas, and Baptist advocacy was significant in the drafting of the First Amendment. It is one of the clearest cases of a theological premise producing a constitutional principle.
