Story of The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

The letter to Kansas.

Written in 2005 while the Kansas State Board of Education was deciding whether to teach intelligent design in science classes. It asked for one third of class time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, on the stated grounds that if intelligent design is not faith but science, the same must be true of this. The board never replied.

What it teachesThat a claim built to be unfalsifiable can be built by anybody, in an afternoon
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The letter is short, courteous and entirely deadpan, and the deadpan is the technique. Henderson does not mock intelligent design; he adopts its form exactly, asks for the same accommodation on the same grounds, and lets the board work out why it should say no to one and yes to the other. The Kansas State Board of Education never replied. It adopted the disputed science standards 6–4 on 8 November 2005; the following year's elections changed its composition, and in February 2007 a reconstituted board reversed the decision 6–4. Henderson had by then posted the letter on venganza.org, where it spread far beyond the argument that produced it. The site now redirects to spaghettimonster.org, and the letter is still the first thing the church shows a visitor.
