Beings are reborn through six realms.

Gods, jealous gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, hell-beings — a wheel with no exit but awakening, and human birth the rare rung where the work can actually be done.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The six realms are painted on the wheel of becoming at the entrance of Tibetan monasteries: gods drunk on pleasure, jealous gods at war, humans, animals, hungry ghosts with pinhole throats and vast bellies, and the hells. Every one of them is temporary. The doctrine's sharpest edge is that the god realm is a trap rather than a reward — nothing gets done there — and human birth is the lucky one precisely because it contains enough suffering to motivate and enough freedom to act. Modern and secular Buddhists routinely read the realms psychologically, as states available in an afternoon, and the traditional schools regard that reading as a real loss.
