Thomas Paine — who lost everything for the last book.

Common Sense sold in the hundreds of thousands; The Age of Reason made him unemployable. He died in New York in 1809 with almost no one at the funeral.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Paine is filed as a teacher rather than a messenger deliberately: deism has no revelation to carry, so it cannot have a prophet, and Paine claimed nothing of the kind for himself. His trajectory is the movement's in miniature — Common Sense in 1776 sold on a scale nothing in the colonies had matched, The Rights of Man made him a French citizen and a British fugitive, and The Age of Reason made him a byword for infidelity in the country he had helped to found. Theodore Roosevelt could still call him a filthy little atheist a century later, which is doubly wrong: Paine attacked atheism at length in the same book. He was refused burial in a Quaker cemetery and buried on his farm at New Rochelle, and his remains were later dug up and lost.
