Core tenet of The Druze Faith

The wise carry the books; the rest carry the faith.

Uqqal and juhhal: initiation into the Epistles is optional and earned — belonging is not.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Druze are divided into the uqqal (the wise, initiated, perhaps 10-20% of the community) and the juhhal (the uninitiated). Only the uqqal read the Epistles, attend the Thursday khalwa, and keep the strictest disciplines; the juhhal keep the ethics and the identity without the texts. Women may be uqqal and are in some accounts more likely than men to be. Initiation is a choice made in adulthood, and can be sought at any age.
