A Abune Antonios. Enthroned in 2004, he objected to the detention of priests, refused to excommunicate three thousand members of the Medhane Alem renewal movement, and asked for the release of political prisoners. In January 2006 he was notified of his removal and placed under house arrest; in 2007 he was taken away and a government-approved bishop installed. He died on 9 February 2022, still in custody, aged ninety-four.
