Heathenry (Ásatrú)

Branch
Core tenet of Heathenry (Ásatrú)

The gods are kin, not kings.

Odin, Thor, Freyja and their kind are honored as elder family — gifted and toasted, not groveled to. A gift for a gift.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Heathen theology is transactional and familial rather than hierarchical: the gods are older and more powerful relatives, not omnipotent sovereigns, and the relationship runs on gift-exchange and mutual obligation. They are not omniscient, can be argued with, and are themselves subject to fate. There is no requirement to love them and no promise that they love you — what is expected is a working relationship, which many practitioners describe as the tradition's most refreshing feature.
