Precept of Jainism

Ahimsa at the table.

Vegetarian at minimum; roots, honey, and unfiltered water questioned — the diet as a non-violence audit.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Jain diet is where the metaphysics becomes daily practice: strict vegetarianism, no root vegetables (uprooting kills the whole plant and its ecosystem), no eating after dark to avoid harming insects drawn to lamps, water strained before drinking. Some Jains fast toward the end of life in a practice called sallekhana — a voluntary fast to death undertaken when the body can no longer support the vows, which Indian courts have had to rule on and which the community defends as the opposite of suicide.
