Core tenet of Mandaeism
John the Baptist is the great teacher.
Yahya Yuhana — honored above all prophets; Jesus, in the Mandaean telling, departed from his teaching.
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
Mandaeans revere John the Baptist as the great teacher and baptizer, and regard Jesus as a false prophet who distorted John's teaching — a position that makes them unique among surviving religions and of enormous interest to scholars of Christian origins. Abraham and Moses are similarly rejected. Adam, Seth, Noah, and John are the true line. The community has never sought converts and has been closed to them.
