Living water is the sacrament.
Baptism is not an event but a rhythm: flowing river water, every Sunday, in white — renewal as repetition.
Running water — yardna, any flowing river, named for the Jordan — is Mandaeism's essential sacrament, and the requirement is physical: baptism must occur in living water, not a pool or a font. This tied the religion to the rivers of southern Iraq and Iran for two millennia, and it is one reason the community's dispersal since 2003 has been so destabilizing. Diaspora communities in Sweden, Australia, and the United States have had to find suitable rivers.
