Monasticism began in our deserts.

Antony walked into the Egyptian desert, and the Christian monastery followed him out.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Christian monasticism began in the Egyptian desert with Antony and Pachomius in the third and fourth centuries, and the Coptic church has never stopped: the monasteries of Wadi Natrun have operated continuously for roughly 1,600 years. Everything monastic in the Western tradition — Benedict, Cluny, the friars — descends from that Egyptian beginning, which is a fact Western Christians frequently do not know.
