These are among the oldest continuous Christian communities anywhere, with liturgies in Coptic, Ge'ez, Armenian, and Syriac — the last being a dialect of Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke. The Ethiopian church has its own biblical canon, wider than any other, including Enoch and Jubilees. Most of these communities have survived as minorities under other rule for well over a millennium, which has shaped their character profoundly.
