"That of God in everyone" is Quakerism's founding conviction and the source of nearly everything else it does: if the divine is present in every person, then no one needs a priest to reach it, no one may be owned, no one may be killed in war, and no one deserves deference by rank. Early Friends refused to remove their hats to social superiors or to use formal address, and were imprisoned in large numbers for it — a fact that indicates how seriously both sides took the implication.
