Rajneeshpuram, 1981 to 1985.
A commune of several thousand built a city, an airstrip and a reservoir on an Oregon cattle ranch, took over the nearby town of Antelope, and ended in federal convictions. Sannyasins who lived there describe both halves.
The Big Muddy Ranch in Wasco County, Oregon was bought in 1981 and several thousand sannyasins built a city on it — roads, an airstrip, a reservoir, a shopping mall. Relations with the county collapsed into a fight over land-use law and then over votes, and in 1984 the leadership around Ma Anand Sheela ran the salmonella attack on The Dalles, bussed homeless people in from other cities to swing an election, and planned killings. Rajneesh, who had been publicly silent for over three years, named the crimes to investigators in September 1985. The commune was wound up within weeks. Sannyasins who lived there describe both the work and the surveillance, and the movement's own publications have carried a documented account of Sheela's crimes for years.
