Sunday worship, in the only temple still open.
Porto Alegre, ten in the morning, in a building inaugurated on Comte's birthday in 1928. Just over thirty adherents remain in the state.
This is the one place in the world where the Religion of Humanity is still practised as a weekly rite, and confirming it matters because the movement is usually written about in the past tense. The Templo Positivista in Porto Alegre, on Avenida Joao Pessoa, was built on land bought in 1912 and inaugurated on 19 January 1928, Comte's birthday. It opens every Sunday at ten in the morning for the culto sociocratico, and its own account states that it is the only positivist temple still in activity in the world, transmitting the doctrine through guided visits and the Sunday address. The guardian apostle is Erlon Jacques de Oliveira, and the temple counts just over thirty followers across Rio Grande do Sul. The larger Templo da Humanidade in Rio de Janeiro, seat of the Igreja Positivista do Brasil, closed after part of its roof came down in 2009 and was interdicted by the civil authorities.
