Core tenet of Santería / Lucumí

Initiation makes the priesthood.

The orisha is seated in the head (kariocha); lineage godparents carry the ashe forward — no self-made santeros.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

There is no membership in Lucumí without initiation, and initiation is expensive, lengthy, and entered only after divination indicates it. The system is a ladder: receiving elekes (beaded necklaces), then the warriors, then possibly kariocha, full priesthood. Godparents sponsor and are responsible, which makes the ritual family the unit of the religion rather than any congregation or building.
