The account associated with OT III — a galactic ruler named Xenu, and the thetans of beings killed 75 million years ago — entered the public record through the 1980s Californian litigation and has since been published everywhere, including on television. Scientologists point out, fairly, that describing a religion by its most exotic confidential text is a move no one makes with other faiths. The church's own position is that the material is scripture and that its circulation is theft.
