Whether you can keep the ethics after dropping the physics.

Modern practitioners mostly take the exercises without the providential cosmos. Traditional Stoics answer that "live according to nature" is empty if nature is not rational, and the argument runs live in the same conference hall.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The live argument inside Stoicism now is whether it is a philosophy or a technique. Modern Stoicism, the organisation, is deliberately neutral and publishes both sides; "traditional" Stoics argue that stripping out providence leaves "live according to nature" with no content, and that what remains is resilience training wearing a toga. The counter-argument is that the surviving Roman texts are already mostly exercises, and that Marcus himself declined to rest the practice on the metaphysics. Nobody has authority to settle it, because the school has had no head since antiquity.
