History & overview · every faith gets one

Antioch's church, still praying in Aramaic.

The church of Antioch and All the East, which held to the one-nature confession after 451 and was rebuilt in the sixth century by Jacob Baradaeus, ordaining bishops on the run. Its liturgy is the Anaphora of Saint James in Syriac, its chant is catalogued in the Beth Gazo, and its heartland in Tur Abdin has been emptying since 1915.

The founding

After Chalcedon the imperial church installed its own bishops in Antioch. Severus of Antioch was deposed and exiled in 518; from the 540s Jacob Baradaeus travelled in disguise across Syria and Mesopotamia consecrating bishops and priests for the non-Chalcedonian congregations, which is why outsiders called the church Jacobite. The patriarchal see, tied to Antioch for fifteen centuries, has been in Damascus since 1959.

Its founding is bound to Severus of Antioch and Jacob Baradaeus, who kept the hierarchy alive after 451 — 451 CE.

What it holds

Reality. God's workmanship, spoken into being by a Word the church still names in its own dialect..

The divine. One God in three persons; one incarnate nature of the Word. The single finger used to make the sign of the cross is meant to say exactly that..

Death and after. Resurrection and judgment; the dead are commemorated on the third, ninth and fortieth days and at the yearly memorial..
