No one approaches the altar unreconciled. The kiss of peace is passed hand to hand through the congregation before the anaphora, and the deacon's call to reconcile is not decorative. Priests routinely refuse communion to two parties in an open quarrel until they have met. In small communities where everyone is related, this is the most demanding rule the church has.
