Nick Bostrom — who wrote both documents.
Co-founder of the World Transhumanist Association and co-author of the 1998 Declaration; author, sixteen years later, of the book that made existential risk from artificial intelligence a mainstream concern.
Bostrom is filed as a teacher rather than a founder because transhumanism has no founding revelation to carry and does not treat him as an authority. He was a co-founder of the World Transhumanist Association in 1998 with David Pearce, co-drafted the Declaration, and later established and directed the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford, which closed in 2024. His trajectory is the movement's in one person: from arguing that enhancement is a moral good to arguing that the most powerful enhancement may be the greatest danger humanity has faced. That a single figure produced both the manifesto and the warning is the fact that makes transhumanism hard to characterise as either optimism or doom, and it is why the contested claim on this page sits where it does.
