Krishna and Rama — the descents.
The avatars beloved above all: Krishna the charioteer-teacher of the Gita, Rama the exiled king of the Ramayana — God with a biography.
The avatars are Vishnu's descents into the world, and Vaishnavism's devotional life runs almost entirely through two of them: Rama and Krishna. Each has its own vast literature, its own festivals, its own regional strongholds, and its own emotional flavor — Rama's is duty and dignity, Krishna's is play and intimacy. Gaudiya Vaishnavas take the further step of holding Krishna to be the source rather than a descent, which inverts the usual relation.
