The hymn of the cosmic man.
The universe made from a primal being's sacrifice — society and cosmos cut from one body.
The Purusha Sukta describes the universe made from the dismemberment of a cosmic person — the moon from his mind, the sun from his eye, and the four social classes from his mouth, arms, thighs, and feet. That last part is the single most consequential passage in Indian religious history: it is the earliest text used to give the varna system a cosmological warrant, and every subsequent argument about caste, from the Bhakti poets to Ambedkar, has had to contend with it. Most scholars regard the hymn as a late addition to the Rigveda.
