Salat — the five daily prayers.

Dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, night: the day itself is shaped around remembrance.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

Salat is five times daily at fixed astronomical points, and its most-noticed feature from outside is that it is physical: standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting, in a set sequence, in Arabic, facing Mecca. It is obligatory rather than devotional-when-moved, which practitioners describe as the point — the prayer interrupts your day whether or not you feel like praying, and the discipline is what makes it work. It can be performed anywhere clean, and the shortening of prayers while traveling is built into the law.
